Introduction

The TOOCAA NOVA is one of the most thoughtfully designed desktop diode laser engravers I’ve tested, and its recognition at both the 2026 Red Dot Award and iF Design Award is well deserved. Once you take a closer look at its engineering and practical innovations, it becomes clear why this machine stands out in a crowded market.

What immediately sets the TOOCAA NOVA apart are two key innovations: it is the world’s first laser engraver to feature a 90° rotating X-axis, and it incorporates an advanced dual-channel smoke extraction system. The rotating X-axis completely eliminates the typical frustration of cylinder engraving, removing the need to buy or install separate base risers just to set up a rotary module. At the same time, the dual-channel exhaust setup pulls smoke away from the material’s surface instantly, which delivers noticeably cleaner cuts and burn-free edges compared to traditional desktop lasers in my real-world testing.

Combined with an intuitive software workflow, a sleek appliance-like aesthetic, and a rapidly growing ecosystem, the TOOCAA NOVA shows just how much thought went into the overall user experience. It is genuinely exciting to see a younger brand bring this level of practical innovation to the table.

In this in-depth review, we will explore every aspect of the TOOCAA NOVA—from build quality and cutting performance to real-world usability. Honestly, by the end of it, you might fall in love with this smart laser machine.

High-End Build Quality of the TOOCAA NOVA

The exterior design of the TOOCAA NOVA speaks for itself, and I believe most people will fall in love with it at first sight. Delivering a true plug-and-play experience right out of the box, it seamlessly fits into a modern living room just like a high-end smart home appliance. Compared to traditional desktop lasers, the build quality of the TOOCAA NOVA feels genuinely premium—the interior engineering is clean, refined, and anchored by an integrated color touch screen. Beyond providing a smooth human-machine interface, the touch screen offers a massive practical advantage: you can connect the machine directly to your local Wi-Fi network without ever plugging in a USB cable. This is something laser machines without a built-in display simply cannot do; even with the xTool M2, setting up Wi-Fi for the first time still forces you to tether the machine via USB.

The floor of the TOOCAA NOVA forms a core part of its dual-channel smoke extraction system, and it is completely removable. This thoughtful design serves a dual purpose: it allows for effortless cleanup of debris after heavy cutting sessions, and removing the plate accommodates larger-diameter objects for cylinder engraving. A small but brilliant engineering detail that often gets overlooked is the limit switch built right into the base plate detection system. It automatically verifies that the base plate is correctly installed before firing, ensuring consistent cutting alignment and user safety.

What excites me most, however, is the 90° rotating X-axis mechanism. This ingenious setup completely eliminates the need to buy or install separate base risers when using a rotary attachment. As the world’s first laser engraver to introduce a 90° rotating X-axis, the TOOCAA NOVA clearly paved the way here, and it feels like the xTool M2 took direct inspiration from this concept for its own platform. That said, TOOCAA’s implementation is noticeably smarter and safer. When engraving cylinders on the NOVA, the laser module rotates so that it faces away from the operator, whereas on the xTool M2, the laser head faces directly toward you during rotary work, which raises subtle safety concerns during operation.

Ecosystem Development: TOOCAA Studio and TOOCAA Space

Despite being a relatively young brand, TOOCAA has already built out a surprisingly complete ecosystem encompassing hardware, dedicated software, official materials, and a global user community. This integrated ecosystem gives creators a convenient, all-in-one platform to turn ideas into finished products without leaving the TOOCAA workflow. A central hub of this experience is TOOCAA Space, the brand’s official online community where makers from around the world share inspiration, exchange tips, and showcase their daily builds.

What makes TOOCAA Space particularly valuable for both beginners and experienced crafters is that all design files on the platform are completely free to download. Once you find a project you like, you can send the vector file directly into TOOCAA Studio with a single click to start engraving immediately. By bridging the gap between social inspiration and practical software execution, TOOCAA has created a seamless, friction-free workspace that simplifies how users discover, share, and bring creative projects to life.

Beginner-Friendly, From Idea to Creation in 10 Minutes

Understanding the full scope of the TOOCAA ecosystem makes it much easier to see why the brand promises a 10-minute setup from initial idea to finished build. In my real-world testing, the TOOCAA NOVA truly lives up to its beginner-friendly reputation. It incorporates a smart, automated workflow that feels just as refined and intuitive as what you get from established competitors like xTool, taking all the intimidating guesswork out of the setup process.

TOOCAA clearly put a lot of thought into perfecting this automated setup. The machine integrates a built-in HD camera, an ultra-precise auto-focus system, and an intelligent dynamic air assist module, while comes pre-loaded with optimized speed and power presets for a wide variety of materials. This completely eliminates the tedious trial-and-error usually required to dial in material settings. From initial prep to the finished piece, the entire creative process feels remarkably smooth and uninterrupted.

Because of its compact desktop footprint, the TOOCAA NOVA offers a standard A4 working area measuring 210 x 297 mm. Despite the modest footprint, it easily accommodates batch production jobs, such as batch engraving four 100 x 100 mm slate coasters. Thanks to the HD camera preview inside, visual positioning is effortless—you simply drag and drop your artwork directly onto the target blanks. Setting parameters, framing the boundary, running the auto-focus routine, and hitting start all happen seamlessly within the software in just a few clicks.

Smart workflow of TOOCAA NOVA
Smart workflow of TOOCAA NOVA

A key component of this smart workflow that often goes unnoticed is the automated smart air assist pump. The system dynamically adjusts its airflow rate based on the specific job type and parameter selection to guarantee optimal results. During delicate photo engraving, it reduces airflow so delicate surface details aren’t burned away; when switching to cutting, it immediately boosts air output to blow away smoke, clear debris, and enhance cutting efficiency. In my hands-on tests, I could distinctly feel the air volume adapting as the machine transitioned between different tasks.

As shown in the image above, I used the TOOCAA NOVA to batch-engrave four custom slate coasters. The finished pieces feature rich detail, razor-sharp alignment, and perfectly clean surfaces free of burn marks. The entire creation was completed in one smooth, continuous run. This zero-friction experience is not only fantastic for complete novices making their first project but also immensely rewarding for experienced crafters and small business owners running daily production.

The Easiest Way to Engrave Cylinders

Next, let’s explore what is easily the most innovative hardware feature on the TOOCAA NOVA: the 90° rotating X-axis. This rotating design completely eliminates the need to purchase or stack separate base risers just to set up a rotary attachment. Switching the NOVA into rotary mode is surprisingly straightforward—you simply loosen the two red thumbscrews on either side of the X-axis gantry, flip the axis down by 90 degrees, and tighten the screws back into place. It is a genuinely clever engineering fix, and I really appreciate how painless it makes the transition.

90° X-axis rotation design

Setting up the rotary attachment itself is equally seamless, so there is no need to dwell on the physical installation steps. However, I do want to highlight the quick-release jaw chucks on TOOCAA’s rotary tool. Instead of forcing you to individually thread every jaw like traditional mechanical screws, these plug-and-play clamps pop into place effortlessly—another subtle detail that saves significant setup time.

With the base plate removed, the TOOCAA NOVA in rotary mode provides enough vertical clearance to engrave cylindrical objects up to 100 mm in diameter. To put this clearance to the test, I set up a natural bamboo pen holder measuring 92 mm in diameter, and the machine handled it with ease. While camera positioning is unavailable once the X-axis is tilted into rotary mode, the auto-focus system remains fully functional. That said, I would love to see TOOCAA introduce automatic cylinder diameter measurement in a future TOOCAA Studio software update to make this step even smoother.

Even without camera alignment in rotary mode, I still consider the TOOCAA NOVA to be the easiest desktop laser for cylinder engraving. The brilliant 90° rotating X-axis design strips away all the tedious prep work that usually keeps people from trying rotary projects in the first place, and TOOCAA deserves a lot of credit for getting this right.

Dual-Channel High-Efficiency Smoke Extraction System, Cleaner Cuts

You might think TOOCAA NOVA only innovates with its rotary engraving, but that is wrong. It also innovates with its dual-channel efficient smoke extraction system. This design guarantees users get cleaner cutting results than with other desktop laser engravers. What is a dual-channel efficient smoke extraction system? Simply put, the dual-channel smoke extraction system of TOOCAA NOVA mainly consists of a blade cutting panel, an exhaust fan, a smart air pump, and internal convective airflow channels. As shown in the structural diagram below, this efficient smoke extraction system allows TOOCAA NOVA to produce much cleaner results when cutting materials. This is a more user-friendly experience where TOOCAA NOVA considers the user experience more than other brands. Right now, many brands still do not care about the user experience, or to save production costs, they still use traditional honeycomb beds as material bases. As you can imagine, when users cut wood, it is a complete disaster. Through thoughtful design and innovation, TOOCAA NOVA successfully sets itself apart from other laser engravers, making it easy for users to get clean laser-cut pieces.

Comparison of Cutting Cleanliness: TOOCAA NOVA vs. Other Laser Engravers

To verify just how effective this smoke extraction really is, I ran a direct side-by-side cutting benchmark on standard plywood, and the visual difference speaks for itself. The finished pieces coming out of the TOOCAA NOVA required absolutely zero post-processing or sanding. In contrast, pieces cut on a standard desktop laser using a traditional honeycomb bed showed severe yellowing and dark smoke stains across both surfaces.

Taking plywood cutting as an example, the picture on the left below shows the work cut with TOOCAA NOVA, with absolutely no post-processing. The right side shows the work cut with another laser engraver using a traditional honeycomb bed structure. The comparison result is obvious: the cleanliness of the piece cut by TOOCAA NOVA is far better than that of other laser engravers.

After actual testing, I really appreciate the design concept of TOOCAA NOVA’s dual-channel smoke extraction system. It thoughtfully solves a user experience issue that has been ignored for a long time. Clean cutting results not only boost beginner users’ confidence during their first creation but also greatly improve production efficiency for small business owners because post-processing time is reduced, or not even needed at all.

Real-World Productivity: Zero Post-Processing for Small Businesses

Please do not underestimate the value of dual-channel smoke extraction. Its clean cutting effect shows its full value in our small business production efficiency. For example, suppose you need to produce items for your Etsy shop, like the leaf ornaments below. I can directly buy colored plywood from TOOCAA’s official store, and then use TOOCAA NOVA to cut and get the finished products, without any post-processing.

The cutting example below shows using TOOCAA NOVA to cut colored plywood, producing 12 leaf-shaped ornaments in one single job. What you see is the finished product right after cutting. It really requires no post-processing. If it is an Etsy shop order, you can package and ship it immediately.

For anyone running a small laser-cutting business or Etsy shop, time is money, and labor spent on post-processing directly eats into your profit margins. Traditional laser engravers with standard honeycomb beds often trap smoke underneath the material, causing back-flash burns, brown scorch marks, and sticky resin build-up. Cleaning those marks usually requires manual sanding, alcohol wiping, or masking tape prep—steps that quickly turn a quick 10-minute job into a tedious hour of manual labor.

The dual-channel smoke extraction system changes this dynamic completely by creating an efficient, continuous convective airflow across both the top surface and the underside of the material. By pulling smoke away instantly through designated internal channels, it prevents soot from settling or baking into delicate veneers, painted surfaces, or natural wood grain. This means you skip sanding and masking altogether, dramatically shortening your order-to-ship cycle, lowering scrap rates on expensive materials, and allowing you to scale up daily batch production effortlessly.

Materials Test: Small-Batch Engraving Done in One Go

Actually, TOOCAA NOVA is not only suitable for beginners. If you want to choose a reliable desktop laser engraver to start your side hustle, you should consider TOOCAA NOVA. In this section, I will use three official materials sold by TOOCAA to simulate the efficiency and results of using TOOCAA NOVA as a small business owner.

It is worth mentioning that TOOCAA NOVA has the ability to automatically recognize material types and then automatically set engraving or cutting parameters, provided that you purchase official TOOCAA materials. Official TOOCAA materials come with a material identification card featuring a QR code. As shown in the picture below, when the material identification card is placed under the camera, TOOCAA Studio automatically recognizes the QR code and sets the accurate material, which automatically configures the engraving or cutting parameters for you.

The small-batch production case below uses official oak coasters sold by TOOCAA. In this project, I batch-engraved six customized oak coasters. The camera positioning helped me align the design quickly. The maximum engraving speed of TOOCAA NOVA is 36,000 mm/min (600 mm/s), but the optimal engraving parameters vary for different materials. The optimal parameters automatically set by TOOCAA Studio for these coasters were: 24,000 mm/min, 80% laser power, and 0.1 mm interval. Completing the personalized engraving for these six oak coasters took about 20 minutes, which is pretty good production efficiency. Most importantly, as shown in the picture, the engraving quality is excellent, with sharp lines, rich details, and a very clean material surface.

These three engraving projects clearly show that the TOOCAA NOVA is not just a creative tool for beginners. The TOOCAA NOVA smart laser engraver provides a very smart workflow, an efficient and stable engraving speed of 600 mm/s, and high-quality engraving results. Although its working area is only A4 size (210 x 297 mm), it is completely enough for side hustlers, crafters, and makers who like to create at home or need small-batch production. Looking at it the other way around, choosing a large and bulky machine in a home or studio with limited space is not a good idea because it takes up your limited workspace. I feel that the TOOCAA NOVA is just right for this group of users.

AI Creation on TOOCAA Studio

For diode laser engravers, engraving high-quality photos on different materials, such as plywood, is always a challenge. The built-in AI creation feature in TOOCAA Studio makes high-quality photo engraving on plywood easily accessible with the TOOCAA NOVA. The AI creation section in TOOCAA Studio provides both text-to-image and image-to-image features. In other words, AI creation can flexibly transform photos that are originally unsuitable for engraving into images that are perfectly suited for laser engraving.

Take the image-to-image feature in TOOCAA Studio as an example. It currently provides 8 image style conversions, each with its own unique engraving effect. I tried taking a portrait photo that was originally unsuitable for plywood engraving and asked the AI to convert it into Mascot Emblem style and Comic Style. As shown in the picture, the comic style image generated is very close to the original photo, but the new image can now be perfectly engraved on plywood.

The three photo engraving results on plywood below were all made using laser-ready images generated by AI creation. The engraving parameters were 24,000 mm/min, 100% laser power, 0.1 mm interval, and Stucki mode. The engraving quality is right here for you to see. I can say they are all perfectly engraved on plywood, especially the third photo, which is extremely close to the original photo in terms of both detail richness and character image.

This gives us an important insight: when photo laser engraving hits a bottleneck, try using AI creation to convert the photo into a format more suitable for laser engraving. The photo engraving performance of the TOOCAA NOVA 20W diode laser engraver satisfies me just as well. The smart workflow of TOOCAA NOVA itself, combined with the AI creation ecosystem, truly gives me a very relaxed creative experience. Without TOOCAA’s creative ecosystem support, I might feel some creative anxiety. However, TOOCAA’s complete ecosystem ensures that I can finish my creations in one smooth process during testing, which is really a great experience!

TOOCAA 20W Max Cutting Test

I also conducted strict cutting tests on the cutting performance of the TOOCAA NOVA 20W diode laser. The actual test showed that the TOOCAA NOVA 20W can cut 10 mm thick solid pine wood in a single pass at 60 mm/min with 100% laser power. Cutting 20 mm solid pine wood is a bit challenging, requiring two passes at 60 mm/min and 100% laser power to barely cut through the 20 mm thick pine. Therefore, the TOOCAA NOVA 20W can well satisfy the cutting needs for soft wood under 10 mm to 15 mm. In other words, this cutting capability can efficiently handle daily 3 mm plywood cutting.
