Taking my project as an example, I planned to create a color engraving design on 201 stainless steel. I first engraved five sets of test arrays with different focal distance parameters on the 201 stainless steel. As shown in the image below, the focal distances for the five-parameter test arrays were 155, 157, 159, 161, and 163. For instance, the test array at a 163 mm focal distance produced a cyan color using 30 mm/s speed, 60% laser power, and 300 lines per inch.

Color Engraving On The 304 Stainless Steel Cup With A Rotary

Wecreat Lumos paired with the rotary module, which unlocks its greater potential, enabling laser engraving on regular cylindrical objects, rings, and more. Setting up the rotary module is straightforward and requires no further explanation here. Continuing with the example of metal color engraving, this time I plan to engrave the same colorful pattern on a 304 stainless steel cup using the rotary module.

Due to the material difference between 304 stainless steel and 201 stainless steel, achieving consistent color engraving on the 304 stainless steel cup requires re-testing the parameters. The steps are very similar to before, only switching from flat engraving mode to cylindrical engraving mode.

Wecreat Lumos Image Engraving Test

The Wecreat Lumos portable laser engraver features dual laser sources: a 10W diode laser and a 3W infrared laser. This dual-source design makes the Wecreat Lumos exceptionally versatile in material compatibility, capable of engraving over 300 different materials. Engraving vector graphics or SVG images is effortless for this laser engraver. The real challenge lies in achieving high-definition engraving of various photos.

10W Diode vs. 3W IR: Which Offers Higher-Definition Engraving?

The complementary capabilities between the 10W diode laser and 3W IR laser make the Wecreat Lumos more versatile for material engraving. The Wecreat Lumos’s 10W diode laser has a spot size of 0.05 x 0.05 mm, while the 3W IR laser boasts a spot size of 0.01 x 0.01 mm (that’s incredibly fine!). Theoretically, the 3W IR laser delivers finer, higher-definition image engraving. Now, let’s evaluate the difference in engraving precision between the two using a case study.

I plan to engrave portraits on black metal cards using both the 10W diode laser and the 3W IR laser. As seen in the image below, the portraits feature highly detailed elements, particularly the hair. Without sufficient engraving precision, it would be challenging to fully reproduce these intricate details.

Thanks to the Wecreat Lumos’s 50MP high-definition camera positioning feature, I easily resized the image and aligned it precisely along the card’s edge for engraving. Additionally, the Wecreat Makeit software comes pre-loaded with optimal engraving parameters for various materials. However, one drawback is that the current automatic parameter settings aren’t entirely optimal. They seems to don’t adjust based on the type of laser source.

Camera positioning

Overall, I’m very satisfied with Wereat Lumos’ workflow. It’s mostly automated, with no tedious manual steps involved. The following three engraving samples were produced using a 10W diode laser and a 3W IR laser, respectively. The engraving speed of the Wecreat Lumos is also quite fast, capable of completing the engraving of an image onto a metal card within two minutes. You can quickly identify that the image on the far right offers the highest resolution—it was engraved with the 3W IR laser.

The first image on the left was engraved with the following parameters: 10W diode laser, 240 DPI, 55% laser power, and 200 μs dotting duration. Judging by the engraving quality, it falls significantly behind the other two images. The middle engraving image was also created using the 10W diode laser, but with the DPI increased to 350. While it appears sharper than the first image, the engraving is overexposed, meaning the material surface was burned excessively. The third image, on the far right, was engraved using a 3W IR laser with the following parameters: 3W IR laser, 350 DPI, 55% laser power, 200 μs dotting duration. As you can see, it perfectly renders the image as intended—with clear details and no excessive burning of the material that would cause overexposure. This demonstrates that the 3W IR engraving is more gentle. To achieve even higher image definition, increasing the DPI value, such as to 500 DPI, is recommended.

10W Diode Laser Engraving Testing: Capable of What 3W IR Cannot

The 3W IR laser has demonstrated astonishing results in metal color engraving and high-definition engraving. However, for materials incompatible with IR lasers, the 10W diode laser can serve as a complementary solution. For instance, it excels on non-metallic materials such as leaves, plywood, and other commonly used DIY materials.

The leaf engraving below was achieved using the 10W diode laser in engraving mode. The Wecreat Lumos 10W laser leaf engraving is truly impressive; it looks incredibly lifelike! The last machine I encountered was the xTool F2. The parameters for this leaf engraving were: 10W diode, 55% power, 500 dpi, 230 μs dotting duration, and a total processing time of 4 minutes and 30 seconds.
